Hi dear readers, I am Anton,LuLuLu’s newest staff member,

 

 

 and this time I will beintroducing you to Japanese New Years customs!

They are quite different to the ones I know from back in Europe,

but they were very exciting to be part of, I think we could
even learn a bit from them!

New Year’s Eve in Japan,

also known as Shougatsu(正月) is similar in many ways to
that back in Europe, but it seems to be a bit more relaxed.

NHK hosts a yearly New Year’s singing competition for the top artists of the past year,

which runs on TV all theway until midnight.

 

 

It’s called “Kohaku Uta Gassen” and

this year it even featured a live performance from Queen.

It is also customary for temples all around Japan to ring their bell 108 times
throughout New Year’s Eve. This is said to cleanse the people from the 108 sins which
according to buddhism plague the human condition. Just past midnight is when the bell
will be rung for the 108th time.

However, here is where the Japanese New Year really separates itself from the
European one that I am familiar with. Whilst we in Europe stay up drinking the whole
night, many Japanese instead go to sleep after midnight, and that’s for a very special
reason.
In Europe we see January 1st as the great hangover day, but in Japan, January 1st is
called Ganjitsu(元日) and is in fact the most important holiday of the whole year!

Of course we all celebrated Ganjitsu together here at LuLuLu as well! So let me take you
through a Ganjitsu(元日) LuLuLu style.

First of all we had to wake up before sunrise (or stay awake till then), as it is said that
witnessing the first sunrise of the year will bring you great luck for the coming year.
Furthermore, as a sort of new year's resolution, you are supposed to make a wish for
the coming year as the sun rises.

 

 

Luck and wishes aside, this was worth it just for the view, it was so beautiful! We went
to Kochi’s beachfront and despite how early it was, the beach was packed with people
who had all come to see the first sunrise of the year.

 

 

After leaving the beach we then went on to visit a temple as that is also customary for
Ganjitsu(元日). In our case, the closest temple to LuLuLu is Chikurinji temple, which is
located on top of Mt. Godaisan, and overlooking Kochi City. This is also one of Kochi’s
landmarks which I will be covering in a future blog post, so stay tuned for that!

 

 

When entering the temple, you first ring the bell to announce your arrival. So of course
we all did so. Some a bit louder than others.

 

 

Since it was January 1st, the temple was full of locals who had all come to begin the
new year in the traditional way. It is customary to give a small donation to the main
temple and afterwards make a wish for the coming year. And so of course all of us at
LuLuLu did so!

 

 

Lastly we all got small lucky papers similar to the ones from the last post about
Katsurahama Beach, this time it seems my luck has improved! So I wrapped mine
around the line which was hung on the temple grounds, to hopefully make my luck
come true.

今回は日本のお正月の習慣をご紹介します！
少しは見習いたいものだ！

日本の大晦日は「正月」とも呼ばれ、ヨーロッパと似ているところが多い。NHKは毎年その年のトップ・アーティストを決める新春歌合戦を開催している。
深夜までテレビで放映される。

その名も「紅白歌合戦」。
クイーンのライブもあった。また、日本中のお寺で除夜の鐘を108回つく習慣がある。
除夜の鐘を108回つく。これは108の罪から人々を清めるためと言われている。
午前0時過ぎ、108回目の除夜の鐘が撞かれる。

しかし、ここが日本の新年が、
私がよく知っているヨーロッパの新年と大きく異なる点だ。ヨーロッパでは一晩中飲み明かす。
多くの日本人は午前0時を過ぎると眠りにつく。
特別な理由がある。
ヨーロッパでは1月1日は大二日酔いの日とされているが、日本では1月1日は
元日」と呼ばれ、一年で最も重要な祝日である！もちろん
もちろんLuLuLuでもみんなで元日を祝いました！

まず、日の出前に起きなければならない（あるいは、それまで起きていなければならない）。
初日の出を拝むと、その年の幸運がもたらされると言われているからだ。
さらに、新年の決意のようなものとして、日の出とともに来年の願い事をすることになっている。

幸運と願いはさておき、この景色を見るだけでも行く価値があった！私たちは初日の出を見に来た人たちでビーチはいっぱいだった。

ビーチを出た後、私たちはお寺を訪ねた。
元日だ。私たちの場合、ルルルに一番近いお寺は五台山の頂上にある竹林寺だ。
五台山の山頂にあり、高知市を見下ろすことができる。高知のランドマークのひとつでもある！

お寺に入るときは、まず鐘をついて到着を知らせます。もちろん
私たちもそうしました。他の人より少し大きな声で。

その日は1月1日だったので、お寺は伝統的な方法で新年を迎えるためにやってきた地元の人たちでいっぱいだった。
伝統的な方法で新年を迎えるためだ。本堂に小さなお賽銭を入れ、その後に新年の願い事をするのが習わしだ。
もちろんLuLuLuでもそうした！

最後に、前回の桂浜の記事と同じような小さなラッキーペーパーを全員に配った。
今回は運が良くなったようだ！
境内に吊るされた線に巻きつけて、運が良くなることを祈った。
願いが叶うように。
