Hi dear reader, my name is Anton and I am a helper here at LuLuLu.

 

Today I will be
introducing you to The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum which is located right next
to Katsurahama Beach here in Kochi.

But first of all, I want to give you a short introduction to Sakamoto Ryoma and his life,
since he is not only a local hero, but somewhat of a national treasure!

 

 

Sakamoto Ryoma is shown here, illustrated on the scroll hanging to the left.

He was born in 1835 right here in Kochi City, in fact his birth place is not too far from
LuLuLu. During his time of birth, Japan was ruled by the Edo Shogunate. Ryoma
became a samurai, and one with a clear goal in mind. He, alongside many others at the
time, believed that Japan would be better off being united under the rule of the Emperor,
instead of the Edo Shogunate.

Ryoma managed to forge an alliance between the Choshu and Satsuma domains,
which were very powerful domains at the time. He also created a proposal for the Tosa
domain, which suggested that instead of risking a civil war, a peaceful transfer of power
to the Emperor would be beneficial to all, this peaceful transfer of power was also
known as the Taisei-hokan. The domain of Tosa made the proposal to the Shogun
Yoshinobu Tokugawa who accepted it, and so, the Edo Shogunate came to an end.

Ryoma would afterwards write a mission statement for the new government, in which he
offered many different ways to lead Japan into a bright future. However, only one month
after the transfer of power back to the Emperor, Ryoma was assassinated in Kyoto,
therefore he sadly never lived to see the results of all his hard work.

Already at the entrance of the museum you are greeted with a statue of him.

 

 

The first section of the museum features various scrolls and letters written by Ryoma.
Some recreations, while others are original! It also features some miscellaneous
possessions of his.

 

 

On the same floor you will find a room dedicated to another very influential samurai from
Kochi, John Manjiro. He, as well, had a truly unique and fascinating life, so I highly
recommend reading all about him there as well!

 

 

The next section of the museum features various interactive exhibitions as well, and a
rooftop with the most amazing view!

 

 

Lastly the museum of course also has it’s very own souvenir shop! It features all sorts of
miscellaneous inventory inspired by Ryoma and his life.

Katsurahama Beach, as well as this museum. Together they make a great day-trip.

坂本龍馬記念館をご紹介します。

まず最初に、坂本龍馬とその生涯について簡単に紹介したい、
坂本龍馬は地元の英雄であると同時に、人間国宝でもあるからだ！

坂本龍馬は左の掛け軸に描かれている。

彼は1835年にここ高知市で生まれた。
LuLuLuからそう遠くない。彼が生まれた時代、日本は江戸幕府に支配されていた。
龍馬は武士となり、明確な目標を持っていた。彼は、当時の多くの人々とともに
江戸幕府ではなく、天皇の支配のもとに日本が統一された方が良いと考えたのだ。

龍馬は長州藩と薩摩藩の同盟に成功した。

龍馬はまた、土佐藩に対する提案も作成した。
この平和的な権力移譲は大政奉還とも呼ばれた。
土佐藩は将軍にこの提案をした。
徳川慶喜はこれを受け入れ、江戸幕府は幕を閉じた。

龍馬はそのあと、新政府のために使命を書き記す。
日本を明るい未来に導くためのさまざまな方法を提示した。

しかし、わずか1ヵ月後龍馬は京都で暗殺された
そのため、龍馬は悲しいかな、自分の努力の成果を見ることはできなかった。

ミュージアムの最初のセクションには、

龍馬が書いた様々な巻物や手紙が展示されている。
再現したものもあれば、オリジナルのものもある！

また持ち物も展示されている。

同じ階には、高知出身のもう一人の影響力のある侍、ジョン万次郎の部屋もある。
彼もまた、実にユニークで魅力的な人生を送った。

博物館の次のセクションには、様々な体験型の展示もあり、

また、素晴らしい眺めの屋上もある。
屋上からの眺めは最高だ！

最後に、このミュージアムにはもちろん土産物店もある！
