In this blogpost I’llbe introducing you to Harimayabashi! A pretty little bridge located in the heart of Kochi.

 

 

As you can see on the image above, there is a small white statue situated in front of the bridge.
The statue depicts a young couple, it represents the local love story of a priest from the nearby
Chikurinji temple, and his love from the city. Since the temple forbade relationships, the priest
had to keep his relationship to the girl a secret. One day however, their relationship was
discovered by the public. The priest was seen at Harimayabashi, purchasing a comb for his
lover as a gift. But buddhist priests don’t have any hair, and so, their cover was blown. Both he
and his lover were banished from the city, never to see each other again. Sadly this love story
has no happy ending, but the love the two had for each other continues to inspire many people

till this day. And so the Harimayabashi bridge, as well as the statue of the two, ended up
becoming quite the famous landmark.

 

Nowadays the bridge and its rather sad story, plays a big part in Kochis culture. It’s situated
right next to the largest intersection of the city, so it’s a natural landmark depicted on many
signs.
Another local landmark is situated just on the other side of the intersection facing
Harimayabashi. It’s a large clock built into the side of an office building.

 

 

At every hour mark, the clock will proceed to play quite the lively tune.

 

 

As it plays the tune, wooden depictions of Kochis' local highlights pop out of it, one by one.
Kochi castle, Katsurahama beach, Yosakoi dancers, and lastly, Harimayabashi.

Information about Harimayabashi and LuLuLu
- Harimayabashi is available 24/7 as it is located outside. However the clock a cross from
it will only ring during daytime.
- You can access it easily by taking the tram from LuLuLu. It is a 20min ride and costs
200yen. Alternatively you can walk it in around 45min. The route is illustrated in the　image below.

はりまや橋を紹介します！高知の中心部にある小さな橋です。

上の画像のように、橋の手前に小さな白い像があります。
この像は若いカップルを描いている。
竹林寺の住職と都会から来た彼の恋の物語である。
お寺は恋愛を禁じていたため、住職は少女との関係を秘密にしなければならなかった。しかしある日、二人の関係は世間に知られてしまった。
住職がはりまや橋で、恋人に櫛をプレゼントしているところを目撃されたのだ。
僧と恋人は二度と会うことなく、この町から追放された。

悲しいかな、
このラブストーリーはハッピーエンドではなかったが、2人の愛は今日に至るまで多くの人々に勇気を与え続けている。

こうして、はりまや橋と二人の銅像は、有名なランドマークとなった。

 

現在、この橋とその悲しい物語は、高知の文化の中で大きな役割を果たしている

橋は高知市最大の交差点に隣接しているため、多くの標識に描かれている。

交差点の反対側、はりまや橋方面には、もうひとつのランドマークがある。

はりまや橋に面している。それは、オフィスビルの側面にはめ込まれた大きな時計だ。

毎正時になると、時計は賑やかな音を奏でる。

その音に合わせて、高知県の見どころを描いた木彫りの絵が次々と飛び出してくる。
高知城、桂浜、よさこい踊り子、そしてはりまや橋。
