男爵いものルーツは高知にあった！？ルルル近くの偉人・川田龍吉の物語

最近、ルルルでは料理がちょっとしたブーム。
「じゃがいもって種類いろいろあるよね〜」なんて話から盛り上がったのが、日本でもっとも有名な男爵いも。
実はこれを日本に初めて導入したのは、ルルルのある・高知市旭出身の川田龍吉男爵なんです！

彼は英国に留学し、帰国後は造船業や農業の近代化に尽力。北海道・函館で荒廃した造船所を復活させ、さらに農業にも挑戦。
イギリスやアメリカから取り寄せた種いもを試験栽培し、最も適した「アイリッシュ・コブラー」が、のちの「男爵いも」として日本全国に広まりました。

ホクホクしていて煮崩れしにくい男爵いもは、今でもポテトサラダやコロッケの定番。
名前の由来は「男爵様が育てたいも」と地元の人々が呼んだことからだとか。

さらに驚きなのが、男爵いもには“恋の物語”もあったこと。
イギリス留学中、川田はジェニーという女性と恋に落ち、畑を歩きながらじゃがいもを食べた日々を後に思い出して、北海道の地で育てようと決めたのです。
結婚は叶わなかったものの、90通のラブレターとジェニーの金髪が川田の金庫に大切に保管されていたことが、死後に発見されました。

「龍馬だけじゃない、高知の偉人」にふさわしい存在ですね。
ルルルでは「えっ、そんな人が高知にいたんだ！？」とみんなで盛り上がりました。

Love and Potatoes: The Romantic Story Behind Japan’s Favorite Spud

Did you know that Japan’s beloved Danshaku-imo (Baron Potato) was introduced by Baron Ryokichi Kawada, born right near LuLuLu in Kochi City?

After studying in the UK, Kawada returned to Japan to lead modernization efforts in shipbuilding and agriculture. In Hokkaido, he imported seed potatoes from the West and found one that thrived—“Irish Cobbler.” It later became known as Danshaku-imo.

Its name came from local farmers calling it “the baron’s potato.”
But here’s the twist: Kawada once fell in love with a British woman named Jenny. They enjoyed simple joys—like eating warm potatoes together.
Though their marriage never happened, Kawada kept 90 heartfelt letters and a lock of Jenny’s hair safe until his death.
