春のお遍路、外国人ゲストのリアルな声｜CameronとJonatanが語る四国遍路の魅力

こんにちは、高知初のシェアハウス＆ゲストハウス LuLuLu スタッフのジョーです！

最近は春の陽気が心地よくなってきて、LuLuLuにもお遍路さんの宿泊が増えてきました。
今日は、アメリカから来た Cameron Laird（キャメロン・レアード）さん と、スウェーデンから来た Jonatan Gregory（ヨナタン・グレゴリー）さん のお二人が滞在中。
せっかくなので、なぜお遍路を始めたのか？印象に残った出来事や好きなお寺は？ など、いろいろお話を伺ってみました！

お遍路を始めたきっかけは？

Cameronさんは「日本には何度も仕事で来ていたけれど、いつも数日だけだった。もっと時間をかけて、日本の文化や人々と関わりたかったんです」と話してくれました。
「じゃあ、どうせなら歩いて旅をしてみよう！」と、四国遍路の旅を決意したそうです。

一方、Jonatanさんは「仏教や瞑想を日常的に実践していて、頭で理解するだけじゃなく、実際に体験として感じる旅がしたかった」とのこと。
まさに“心と体で歩く旅”として、お遍路は彼にぴったりの選択だったようです。

日本で驚いたこと・感動したことは？

2人が共通して語っていたのは、「日本人の優しさと温かさ」。
Jonatanさんは「昨日、知らない女性が車を止めて、わざわざプレゼントを渡してくれた。その時、彼女がすごく嬉しそうに笑っていて、それがとても印象的だった」と話してくれました。

Cameronさんは、出身地のテキサスの話を交えながら、「アメリカの都市部では、知らない人と目も合わせないけど、日本では“こんにちは”って挨拶を交わす文化があって、すごく気持ちがいい」と語ってくれました。
大都市でない高知ならではの“つながりのある雰囲気”を体感してくれているようでした。

好きなお寺は？

お遍路中で印象に残ったお寺について聞いたところ、Cameronさんは「彫刻がすごく精巧で、柱や梁まで細かく作られていた。本堂の木の造りに感動して動画を撮った」と、職人技に感動した様子。

Jonatanさんは「子どもを守るお地蔵さんがたくさん並んでいたお寺に心を打たれた」と語り、「あの場所には、静けさの中に特別な優しさを感じた」とも話していました。

また、2人とも山の上のお寺で霧に包まれた体験をしていて、「あそこはまるで異世界だった」「霧の中で佇むお寺の姿が幻想的で忘れられない」と、印象深い思い出になっているようでした。

Spring Pilgrimage in Japan: Real Voices from Cameron & Jonatan

Hello! I'm Joe, a staff member at LuLuLu, the first share house & guesthouse in Kochi.

Spring has arrived, and we've been welcoming more pilgrims lately.
Today, we had two amazing guests staying with us: Cameron Laird from the U.S. and Jonatan Gregory from Sweden.
We asked them why they started the pilgrimage, what surprised them, and which temples they loved most.

Why Did They Start the Pilgrimage?

Cameron had visited Japan several times for work, but only briefly.
“I wanted to stay longer, and experience Japan more deeply,” he said.
So, he decided to walk the Shikoku Pilgrimage as a way to immerse himself.

Jonatan, on the other hand, practices Buddhism and meditation.
He shared, “I didn’t just want to understand Buddhism intellectually—I wanted to live it, feel it with my body and heart.”

What Surprised or Touched You Most?

Both were impressed by how kind Japanese people are.

Jonatan shared a story about a woman who stopped her car just to hand him a small gift.
“She looked so happy doing it—it really moved me,” he said.

Cameron noted the difference from his hometown in Texas:
“In the U.S., people don’t greet strangers. But here, even walking down the street, people say ‘Konnichiwa.’ It’s wonderful.”

Favorite Temples?

Cameron was blown away by the craftsmanship of the wooden structures in one temple.
He even took videos of the details, including the beams and carvings.

Jonatan was deeply moved by a temple filled with Jizo statues—guardians of children.
He felt a unique peace and warmth at that place.

Both described a misty mountain temple experience as something magical:
“It felt like being in another world,” they said.

The Shikoku Pilgrimage isn’t just sightseeing—it's a journey of the soul, through nature, tradition, and kindness.
