【関ヶ原で見つけた高知とのつながり】長宗我部氏・山内氏・坂本龍馬まで続く歴史の旅

先日、関ヶ原古戦場記念館に行ってきました！
ここ、ほんとうに面白かったです。

なかでもシアターのダイナミックな演出が最高。
映像と音響の迫力に、まるで戦いの渦中にいるような感覚に…！

そんな臨場感たっぷりの展示を見ながらふと思ったのが、
「高知と関ヶ原って、実は深い関係があるんだよなあ」ということ。

そのカギを握っているのが、長宗我部氏と山内氏。
そして、それを分けたのがまさにこの関ヶ原の戦いなのです。

🌸 長宗我部氏とは？

高知といえば、やはり長宗我部元親（ちょうそかべもとちか）。
戦国時代、土佐一国を統一し、さらに四国全域を制圧した名将。
しかし1585年、豊臣秀吉の四国征伐により降伏 → 土佐一国の領有にとどまる。
**関ヶ原の戦い（1600年）では西軍（石田三成側）**に味方。
その結果、戦後に**改易（領地没収）**の憂き目に。

🌸 山内氏とは？

一方、関ヶ原の戦いで東軍（徳川家康側）についたのが山内一豊（やまうちかずとよ）。
家康の信頼を得て、土佐藩主に抜擢。
1601年より高知城を築き、以後幕末まで山内家が土佐を支配することになります。

🌸 両者の関係と土佐への影響

この関ヶ原の戦いをきっかけに、土佐の支配者は長宗我部氏から山内氏へと交代。

しかし土佐の民衆の間では、今も長宗我部元親を英雄視する声が強く残ります。
一方で、山内家は統治の安定を図るため、長宗我部旧臣たちを冷遇。
これがやがて郷士制度を生み、士族との間に身分差が固定される結果となりました。

この差別意識が幕末の土佐勤王党や、坂本龍馬・武市半平太ら郷士出身の維新運動にもつながっていくのです。

🌸 今も続くその影響とおすすめスポット

高知では今でも長宗我部元親の人気は根強く、
さまざまな場所でその名を見かけます。

また、幕末の志士たちの活躍を伝えるスポットとしておすすめなのが、
坂本龍馬記念館（高知市桂浜）。

郷士出身の坂本龍馬がどのように時代を動かしていったのか、
その背景にはこうした土佐の複雑な身分制度や
長宗我部から続く歴史の積み重ねがあるんだな、と実感できる展示が充実しています。

関ヶ原という一つの戦いが遠い昔の話ではなく、
今の高知の文化や空気にもつながっているということを感じられる場所です。

Discovering the Connection Between Sekigahara and Kochi: From Chosokabe to Yamauchi and Sakamoto Ryoma

I recently visited the Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum — and it was fantastic!

The dynamic theater presentation was especially impressive.
The sound and visuals made me feel like I was right in the middle of the battle.

As I watched, I couldn’t help but think:
“Kochi actually has a deep connection to Sekigahara.”

That connection lies with the stories of the Chosokabe and Yamauchi clans,
and the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara that reshaped their destinies.

🌸 Who Were the Chosokabe?

In Kochi, Chosokabe Motochika is a legendary figure.
During the Sengoku period, he unified Tosa Province and even expanded to control all of Shikoku.
In 1585, after Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s conquest of Shikoku, he was forced to surrender and kept only Tosa.
In the 1600 Battle of Sekigahara, Chosokabe sided with the Western Army (Ishida Mitsunari).
As a result, his lands were confiscated after the battle.

🌸 Who Were the Yamauchi?

Yamauchi Kazutoyo fought for the Eastern Army (Tokugawa Ieyasu) at Sekigahara.
He was rewarded by being made lord of Tosa Province.
In 1601, he began constructing Kochi Castle, and the Yamauchi family ruled Tosa until the end of the Edo period.

🌸 The Impact on Tosa and Its People

The Battle of Sekigahara marked a major shift in Kochi’s leadership —
from the Chosokabe to the Yamauchi.

Even today, the people of Kochi still admire Chosokabe Motochika as a hero.
However, to maintain order, the Yamauchi clan marginalized the former Chosokabe retainers.
This led to the creation of the Goshi (local samurai) class, establishing a clear social divide.

This sense of injustice fueled the spirit of rebellion in groups like the Tosa Loyalist Party
and leaders such as Sakamoto Ryoma and Takechi Hanpeita, who were of Goshi origin.

🌸 Continuing Influence and Must-Visit Spots

Today, Chosokabe Motochika remains a beloved figure in Kochi.

For those interested in the legacy of Kochi’s samurai spirit,
I highly recommend visiting the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum in Katsurahama.

Sakamoto Ryoma, born a Goshi, overcame the era’s social divisions and helped shape modern Japan.
The museum beautifully illustrates how Kochi’s complex social history — shaped in part by events like Sekigahara — influenced Ryoma’s life and ideals.

You’ll gain a much deeper appreciation of how history continues to shape Kochi today.
