Shogi in Kochi: When a French Master and a Chilean Learner Met at LuLuLu
Hi! I'm Joe, staff at LuLuLu Guesthouse in Kochi, Japan. We’ve hosted many amazing helpers from around the world—but two stand out for their love of shogi (Japanese chess).
🇫🇷 Jason from France: The Shogi Veteran
Jason, a helper from France, had been playing shogi for about six years before coming to LuLuLu. He first learned the rules in France with a friend—thanks to a Naruto episode featuring the game!
While in Kochi, he often played with local elderly players near Kochi Castle, especially two regulars: Takeda-san and Takeuchi-san.
“I still haven’t beaten Takeuchi-san,” he said, “but I’m getting closer.”
🇨🇱 Fabian from Chile: A Passionate Newcomer
Fabian, our helper from Chile, started learning shogi during his stay at LuLuLu. With a background in chess, he quickly grasped the basics—thanks to lessons from Jason—and soon began playing with guests and staff alike.
“Shogi reflects a person’s thinking style. That’s what makes it fascinating.”
💬 A Guest's Highlight
One Japanese guest shared:
“My teenage son had the rare chance to play shogi with a French guest. That became the highlight of our trip!”
Shogi continues to be part of the LuLuLu experience. Even if you’re new to it, you might find yourself drawn into a cross-cultural match that becomes a lifelong memory.
